Thay waved his decrepit hand through the air, one final time.
His runic scribbling, profane, absolute.
Everything at last in place as the black concrete poured into what little area was left surrounding him.
Rasping his last breath, the one he'd always hoped would be a sigh of resignation, no more a relief than he deserved.
Undeath was a doomed bargain, a pact he'd long ago made with his sleeping master, immutable now.
Neither air nor light reached him then, a featureless plinth of obsidian.
In this encasement he would remain, until he was at last called upon.
Thay wondered for many years when that may come to pass, the circumstances that would necessitate his summoning.
Death would be a mercy he could never accept, his servitude total.
Only much later, when the thing that was once Thay had already forgotten what it was, would the carapace crack and produce a withered body, more resembling rotted branches of a tree than bone or flesh.
Mouldering and stumbling outward, eyeless, breathless.
Enthralled as only a tool to meet a purpose, to beg for an order, some distant enfeebled madness still waiting to hear a name it would no longer recognize.
