On this day 76 years ago, the General Electric company (in conjunction with the United States military's Hermes program) launched a rocket equipped with a 35mm camera from the White Sands missile range - the same location that was used for the infamous Trinity atomic bomb test just over a year prior - and it became the first object to take a photograph of the Earth from outer space, reaching a maximum altitude of 65 miles / 105 kilometers, which was a full five times higher than any photograph taken prior. It is one of an innumerable amount of examples of human technological achievement and scientific progress that are inextricably connected to equally horrific developments in destructive power, with the quiet serenity of this photograph (reproduced here as an album cover) underscored by the sardonic observation that such a momentous event was still secondary to the christening of the atomic bomb.
